With sales of approx. €41.5 billion in 2005, Bosch is one of Germany’s largest industrial enterprises with significant international presence. Bosch manufactures products at 260 locations, 199 of which are outside Germany. A total workforce of about 251,000 is employed in the three business sectors Automotive Technology, Industrial Technology, and Consumer Goods and Building Technology. Bosch employs about 6,000 apprentices, and supports about 200 postgraduates in completing their doctoral degree. A large percentage of them retain with Bosch after having obtained their degree.

Throughout the world, more than 23,600 employees are involved in research and development for the Bosch Group. In 2005 Bosch invested almost €3.1 billion for research and development. In 2004 alone, patent applications were made for more than 2,800 inventions, making Bosch the second largest patent applicant in Germany, and the third largest at the European Patent Office.

The Division Advance Engineering of Software-Intensive Systems at the Corporate Sector Research and Advanced Engineering (CR) is responsible for the development of methods, processes, technologies and competencies for the engineering of software-intensive systems. Experts of the division participate actively in standardisation bodies, expert groups, and publicly funded projects such as EAST, EASIS, TIMMO, and VISION.
